Nothing says 'love' like the birth of a baby. The excitement of what's to come...
It's the most amazing, life changing experience you'll ever have. A moment that deserves to be captured and cherished.
Annie Watson Photography is Connecticut's premier newborn photographer and leading expert in capturing those first precious moments.
The Newborn phase passes quicker than a glance… now you see it, now you don't. It's really quite remarkable how quickly they grow. We book Newborn sessions in the first 10 days of life, while your baby is still sleepy and 'drunk on love'.
LET’S PENCIL YOU IN!
We recommend that you schedule your Newborn Session PRIOR to your baby’s birth to ensure a spot on our calendar. Please contact us during your second trimester and we’ll pencil you in.
Call us soon after you deliver so we can arrange a time for the session.
(Put us on the official “baby is here!” call list! Just sayin’…)
The best time for a Newborn Session is in the very first week of life.
Somewhere around day 8 they discover the joy of stretching! Once that happens…they’re not about to let us get them into those curly poses without a fight!
(I know, you have your hands full... but if you want to truly capture Newborn photos, this is what we recommend.)
A well fed newborn is a happy newborn!
Come prepared! Bring plenty of Bottles, diapers, and most of all, patience. ;o) Try to keep your newborn awake before our session, that way, when you get here, they are super sleepy. ;o)
(I know, as soon as they get in the car they fall asleep... sigh...)
Feeding the newborn is a common occurrence during the session. Which is good, we want the baby to be 'drunk on milk'. ;o)
We’ll be more than happy to take breaks as needed to help him/her re-fuel. It’s tough work being a model!
FEEDING DURING A SESSION
Babies are happiest when they have a full belly. We ask that you bring plenty of bottles, or are prepared to breastfeed in the studio. It is imperative, in order to get great shots, that the baby is content and has a full tummy. Babies often need to eat multiple times during a session, so bring more milk than you think you will need.
If for any reason, you are not prepared to feed the baby during the session, we ask that you schedule an appointment when the baby gets older.
Please loosen your newborn’s diaper and clothing at least 30 minutes before the session. Socks, hats, diapers and anything with elastic can leave marks on newborn skin. This gives those little imprint marks time to disappear. (Your newborn will be naked in most of the shots, but we pose them so that all the “private bits” are not on display.)
WHAT TO BRING
HATS & MORE!
Please bring cute hats, headbands, diaper covers and sentimental blankets or wraps. We will try our best to photograph your baby with your favorite items.
*If you would like shots in a diaper, it’s a good idea to have either a cloth diaper, diaper cover in a solid color, bloomers, or something to put over the diaper. Disposable diapers are not too pretty. So, let's cover them up!
We have loads of baby wraps in a wide range of colors.
During the session we’ll be moving the newborn around and scrunching them into those sweet sleepy newborn poses, so we want to make sure they’re sleepy enough to allow us to handle them. The sleepier, the better.
We have a white noise machine to help encourage sleep.
Newborn Sessions consist of a lot of preparing and waiting around for the perfect moment.
We have a collection of bowls, baskets, blankets, and wraps. You are also, of course, welcome to use any of your own props. If you want to bring your own items please bring items with texture and color to help make your images unique.
If you have family heirlooms, toys, hats, props, etc. that you would like me to use in your session, please let us know what you have in mind before our session. We may not get the chance to use all of the items, but we’ll look through them with you to determine what will work best.
After day 14, it can be more challenging to get the baby into that deep sleep that came so easily in their first few days…
Newborn Acne (and sometimes colic) commonly begin at two to three weeks of age - another good reason to schedule you appointment within the first week to ten days of life.
WHO CAN COME?
We encourage you to bring only adults to Newborn Sessions. Please note, Newborn Sessions take a lot of time and patience, therefore we suggest that you schedule an additional session at a later date to photograph your baby with their brothers and sisters.
It is always helpful to bring one additional adult to a session.
Patience is key.
Newborn Sessions can be tricky. It all depends on baby’s mood and willingness to sleep. Unfortunately…this isn’t something we can predict. If your baby does not want to sleep, we 'go with the flow'. We take the baby’s lead; getting them to sleep before posing takes time and they may need to be fed or cuddled a few times first. In fact, we’d say that a good portion of your session will involve feeding, diaper changes, and cuddling.
If sleep doesn’t happen, that’s okay! Wide-eyed newborn photos are beautiful too.
Your baby is going to be in the buff for the majority of this shoot. Please don’t panic if your baby decides to use our blankets (or us) as his/her own personal potty. LOL. Everything is washable.
This is natural and we expect it. Please don’t feel embarrassed or worry when this happens, because they all do it.
We wash all of our baby props and blankets between each session.
After your session we will set up a Reveal appointment for you to come in and look at your fabulous photos.
